Mixed dentition is a stage in which a child starts to lose their baby teeth to make way for the adult teeth to erupt. This happens around ages 6-9 years. At this time, it is good to check with an Orthodontist if you have any concerns in regards to your child's tooth development and alignment.
If needed we can intervene with a short phase of treatment. This is known as a 1st phase of treatment. The focus during the phase is on addressing dental and skeletal issues to guide proper growth and alignment. By addressing these concerns early, the 1st phase of orthodontic treatment sets the foundation for a healthier, more balanced smile.
This phase of treatment can typically last from 9-12 months and may be followed by a 2nd phase of treatment when the patient is in full permanent dentition. Although treatment differs for each patient, common methods include:
- Functional appliances
- Limited phase of fixed appliance(braces)
- Expansion appliances
- Space maintainers
